Bodyguard Strengthens Position , all set for a huge weekend of over 65 cr

The estimated FTI of Aarakshan was 24 last week and it has marginally dropped to 22 this week. The drop may not look significant but will affect the first week collections significantly. The film has been dogged by controversies over the last few weeks. If the producers hoped that these controversies would pull the audience to the theatres to watch the controversial film, the FTI does not support their optimism. The awareness of the film is quite high, interest is high but the urgency is low. The urgency could have been affected by the anticipated ‘Law and Order problems’ at the theatres. A fallout of this concern could have some positive effect on Phhir.

Bodyguard continues to strengthen its position. The FTI of the film is around 57 and it is likely to stabilise around this number. Ready’s FTI was 42 on the day of release and we expect Bodyguard to be around 55-58 on the day of its release. With an FTI around this number one can look at a film worth Rs 130-150 crore.

Yeh Dooriyan’s FTI is around six and this has a chance of quickly climbing up to about ten on the date of release. This movie may be a pleasant surprise at the box-office, but we need to look at its numbers next week.

Akshay and Ajay to work together in Bad Boyz 2 remake.

Buzz is the arch rivals Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn may team up for the Bollywood remake of the Bad Boys II.

Sources reveal that talks are on to rope in the two actors for a desi version of the Hollywood hit film, Bad Boys II, which was directed by Michael Bay for producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

A source associated with a production house that both actors have worked with reveals: “The idea of a remake of Bad Boys II with Ajay and Akshay has been discussed, and the process of acquiring the rights has already been initiated.”

While reports also suggest that director Rohit Shetty may helm this film as he is comfortable with the genre, our source says nothing has been finalised on that front yet.

Interestingly, the talks for a truce seem to have been triggered off by the title Son Of Sardar, which is registered by Akki’s Hari Om Productions. Ajay is believed to be keen on the title for his Hindi remake of Telugu hit Maryada Ramanna. Directed by Ashwini Dheer, the film with Ajay and Sonakshi Sinha is in Punjab.

“Since the title suits their script, Ajay, who’s also producing the movie, is trying to get the title from Akshay,” says a source.

If the Bad Boys II remake works out, then the two actors will be seen in a movie together after over six years since Insaan.

However, this is not the first time that reports of the two actors teaming up are making the rounds. Mid-Day had reported last year that Rohit Shetty was planning to cast them together in an action comedy.

However, it didn’t work out as Ajay was allegedly upset with Akki for knowingly scheduling the release of Action Replayy on the same date (last Diwali) as his Golmaal 3.

“Needless to say, Ajay wasn’t too pleased as this clash affected the collections of his third Golmaal film,” says our source, reminding us that the previous year, too, the two actors clashed at the box-office during the festive season with All The Best and Blue .

Akshay and Ajay’s friendship is said to have soured during the making of Suhaag. Later, it only worsened during Khakhee and Insaan, in which they acted together

Boxoffice opening report : Aarakshan opens Decent , Phhir Poor while Others average.

Aarakshan had a decent opening with multiplexes being good at at around 60% plus while single screens were poor with 30%. The would have had a good to decnt first day if it was not banned in a few states, now the first day will be on the lower side, The public reports are mixed and with the bans especiallly UP and Punjab, it makes it tough for the film.

Phhir opened to a poor 15-20% response.

Singham had a 12.50 crore nett third week taking the three week collections to 86.25 crore nett. The film will drop in most areas this week though the ban in UP for Aarakshan may help as the film is doing well in UP. SUPER HIT

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara grossed around 6.75 crore nett in its fourth week taking its four week total to around 83 crore nett. The film will have limited collations from here on and may just cross the 86 crore nett mark for lifetime business. HIT

Aarakshan Review : Booring but an Engaging film. 2.5/5

AARAKSHAN is about Prabhakar Anand (Amitabh Bachchan), who has been the pillar of a private college in Bhopal for more than 30 years. The idealistic principal believes in merit, but at the same time is considerate towards poor students who can’t score great marks. Deepak who is immensely helped by Prabharkar, is in love with his daughter, Poorbi (Deepika Padukone). Sushant (Prateik) is a good friend of Poorbi and studies in the same college.

A comment in a newspaper on the Supreme Court’s order on reservation lands Prabhakar in a tough spot. He resigns from his post giving way to the scheming Mithilesh Singh (Manoj Bajpai), who’s part of the institute but concentrates more on his private coaching classes. Due to his evil plans, Prabhakar and his family are even forced to give up their home. Will Prabhakar be able to reclaim his life, is what ensues.

Based on the social issue of reservation, Prakash Jha’s AARARSHAN has its heart at the right place. But it takes so long to convey its message that you run out of patience. The first half, despite taking too long (two back-to-back songs) to get to the central plot, is pretty good. The conflicts between the characters make for a compelling watch. But after the interval, Prakash loses his grip as the narrative just drags. It becomes laborious and repetitive watch, with the story moving at a snail’s pace. The climax is too good to be true and fails to have a great impact.

Aarakshan tells an engaging story with very characters taken directly from the real life. Though the film is convincing, but the film is too long to bear..

Aarakshan works as a film that delivers a forceful message.

It is disappointing and a huge let down if in case the viewer is expecting an engaging conversation and a perspective on India’s reservation system.

RATINGS :- 2.5/5

Bodyguard Does Not Have Common Factor Of Big Grossers

The common factor amongst the big grossers over the past few years has been open weeks and limited competition. It is a fact that the four biggest grossers today Three Idiots, Dabangg, Ready and Ghajini have all had three open weeks and films which come next like Golmaal 3 and Raajneeti did not have as much of a clear run. Singham which will ends it run in 6th or 7th position has also had three open weeks.

Bodyguard will be expected to be amongst the above top four films but does not have the advantage of open weeks. Bodyguard has the advantage of a nine day first week but will have competition in its all important second and third week.

Till date the highest grossing film which had competition from a successful film releasing a week after is Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara which will gross around 87 crore nett. Prior to that was Hosefull which grossed around 72 crore nett. Golmaal 3 which grossed 107 crore nett had competition from day one but it was from an unsuccessful film Action Replayy.
